How to Save Your Online Community

Get rid of inactive users!

I recently cleaned up my Meetup (actually 75% done) and got 4 people helping me keeping my 11K Linkedin Group neat.

As far as the Meetup is concerned, I removed inactive members as well as those who never RSVP'd to events. By doing so, I made sure that my communications efforts would go only to those who really want to stay, our evangelists.

To differentiate from the tons of Event Planning communities, we closed down the group and we now approve manually every single candidate. We check their profile and links.

If your community is inactive, skim it down to only those relevant members who really care and you'll get great benefit.

Douglas White on Social Media Today published a great study on engagement on twitter and online forums.

What appears to be working extremely was:

  • Threads were created as questions so as to elicit a response
  • Forum entries were written in a conversational manner. Not all entries contained brand messages
  • Replies to comments from readers were followed up and brand messages were included when appropriate
  • The brand message was included at least once in all conversations

I strongly suggest you read the rest of the article, impressive numbers!
